Mayor Jacobs Proclaims National Travel and Tourism Week

NTTW 2013 OC proclamation

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, alongside characters from local attractions, presented a proclamation declaring National Travel and Tourism Week, which takes place May 4 - 12. Visit Orlando President and CEO George Aguel and CFHLA President Rich Maladecki thanked the Board of County Commissioners for their continued support of the tourism industry and emphasized what it means to the Central Florida region.

Each year, Destination Marketing Organizations and other tourism related entities throughout the country celebrate the travel industry and educate the public about its benefits during this time. The goal is to raise awareness about the positive impact the thriving industry has on local communities and encourage residents to get involved with their local, state and federal elected officials.

Every day in Central Florida is a big day for travel and tourism with nearly 380,000 residents employed directly or indirectly. The industry continues to lead the way in job creation and the total number of visitors in 2012 is expected to top 56 million when numbers are released later this summer... just another reason why Orlando Travel & Tourism Makes Us Smile.

Visit Orlando talks tourism at Hispanic Business Conference

Hispanic Business Conference

More than 350 people gathered at the Orange County Convention Center last week for the Hispanic Business Conference presented by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando. The goal: educate, motivate, and build opportunities for entrepreneurs, leaders and business professionals.

Kicking off the conference was an economic update panel moderated by University of Central Florida economist Sean Snaith. Expert panelists included Dr. Kathleen Plinske, Valencia College; Thad Seymour, Lake Nona Institute; Jerry Ross, National Entrepreneur Center; Dr. Tom Tomerlin, Seminole County Economic Development; and Daryl Cronk, Visit Orlando. Forecasts show that Orlando's economy is improving. Hospitality, which had a job growth of 3.1 percent and added 6,600 jobs during the past year, has bounced back and the region continues to set records for hotel occupancy.

Professional golfer Juan Antonio "Chi-Chi" Rodríguez, the first Puerto Rican to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, gave the conference keynote address and officially opened the 20th Annual Hispanic Consumer Expo. The weekend event featured more than 200 businesses and drew 15,000-plus people.
