National Travel & Tourism Week activities highlight industry

With more than 360,000 Orlando area residents employed in the tourism industry, recognizing and celebrating the industry's impact was the focus during National Travel & Tourism Week (NTTW) May 4-11. Visit Orlando, along with our community partners, coordinated events throughout the week.

On Friday, Visit Orlando President & CEO George Aguel hosted our member partners at Visit Orlando's annual NTTW luncheon at SeaWorld Orlando's Ports of Call. Aguel shared his thoughts on his first few months as leader of the organization. Toni Caracciolo, vice president of global brand management at SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment provided an industry insider look at their new attraction Antarctica, Empire of the Penguin which opens May 24 complete with a few penguin friends from the attraction. DAE Airlines provided a nice treat for two lucky attendees with two pairs of roundtrip tickets to Curacao. DAE Airlines began service from Orlando International Airport (OIA) to Curacao on April 15.

 

NTTW 2013 OC proclamation

 

Proclamations were presented to Visit Orlando and the Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association celebrating NTTW by Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. Visit Orlando also delivered posters and cookie cakes to the TSA and Customs and Border Patrol at OIA and Sanford International Airport to thank them for helping welcome many of the more than 55 million people that visited Orlando last year.

 

Kings Bowl NTTW

 

On Tuesday, May 7 the Orlando Travel & Tourism Makes Me Smile Bowlathon was held at Kings Bowl. More than 100 bowlers participated in the event raising more than $5,800 for Junior Achievement of Central Florida's hospitality education module. And finally the 11th Annual I-Drive 5K wrapped up the week with more than 1,000 runners enjoying the run down International Drive. All proceeds from the run benefit the I-Drive YMCA's learn to swim program.

 



Tourism Industry Bowl-A-Thon Raises $5,800 for Junior Achievement

In celebration of National Travel & Tourism Week, Visit Orlando partnered with Junior Achievement of Central Florida to host the 2nd Annual Orlando Travel & Tourism Makes Me Smile Bowl-A-Thon at King's Bowl on International Drive.

The event had 122 participants and raised $5,800 for Junior Achievement. Proceeds will support the hospitality module that uses practical, hands-on activities to educate and inspire students to pursue careers in the tourism industry. Congratulations to the team with the most participants, EMS Exhibits "CSI: The Experience." Most creative team name went to PTE Productions "Grease Lighting" and best dressed, Ocean Prime "Surf n Turf."
