Golf Tournament Raises $17,000

Golf tournament raises $17,000 for Freedom Ride

Visit Orlando recently held its 18th Annual Golf Tournament at the Walt Disney World Palm Golf Course. The event provides members an opportunity to network with industry professionals and raise money for a worthy cause at the same time. Thanks to the support of Title Sponsor GES and those who participated in the tournament, Visit Orlando was able to present a check valued at $17,000 to Marianne Gray of Freedom Ride.

Freedom Ride is a local non-profit, volunteer-based organization built on the belief that people are not bound by their physical limitations. The team at Freedom Ride is dedicated to enriching lives and experiences of children and adults with disabilities in Central Florida through therapeutic horseback riding and related activities.

Since its inception in 2006, Visit Orlando’s Annual Golf Tournament has raised nearly $200,000 for local charities.

The first full week of May is annually recognized as National Travel & Tourism Week. First celebrated in 1984, the travel community has collectively marked the event in a number of creative ways.

Here in Orlando, we kicked off National Travel & Tourism Week activities at the Board of County Commissioners meeting led by Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs. During the meeting, Mayor Jacobs praised the "hard-working men and women in tourism" for their role in attracting and hosting the record 59 million visitors who came to Orlando in 2013. Without these visitors our community would not be able to undertake premier quality-of-life projects, such as the Amway Center, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the revitalization of the Citrus Bowl Stadium and the planned MLS soccer stadium.

Mayor Jacobs proclaimed the week of May 3-11, 2014, as Travel & Tourism Week in Orange County, and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer did the same at a separate meeting on behalf of the city. Throughout the week, many of the 1,200 member companies that Visit Orlando has the privilege to represent will participate in events ranging from our annual Travel & Tourism luncheon, to the I-Drive 5K Run.

No matter how you celebrate the week, please be sure to take the opportunity to thank the men and women in our community who make it all possible.
